Hi Deb. I use an idea that I got from John Hesselberth's site: http://www.frogpondpottery.com/articles/article.html. I use digital rather than film.
I use formica that is draped over a small table with one end running up the wall. For lighting I made a small soft box using the directions at the link above. I just use one of Christy's halogen painting lights, but most any light would do OK. I could do better if I used a reflector, but right now I don't take enough pictures of the pottery to justify it. That and I don't really use the photos for anything other than showing friends on my blog. I hope this helps.
